To use aromatherapy for earache, combine the following essential oils with 2 tablespoons almond oil and massage around the ear:
Important: Never put essential oils directly into your ears. However, you can place one drop of essential oil on a cotton ball and place it in your outer ear.
Using aromatherapy for earache caused by an ear infection may help relieve inflammation and pain. Useful essential oils include lavender, tea tree, and Roman chamomile. Also, a study on treating acute otitis found basil essential oil effective for getting rid of ear infections.
Child's Ear Infection
For children, you can make a warm compress by adding 3 drops of Roman chamomile to a bowl of hot water. Apply the compress over the ear. When the compress cools, place a new compress over the ear.
Next, make a blend of 3 drops lavender, 3 drops Roman chamomile, and 2 tablespoons carrier oil. Dab a cotton ball in the blend. Gently place the cotton ball in the ear, replacing it with a new cotton ball three times a day.
Other Essential Oil Blends for Ear Infections
For adults, blend:
Massage the blend around the outside of your ear and down your neck.
For children, use only four drops of each essential oil in the olive oil. For infants and toddlers, blend only two drops of each essential oil with the olive oil.
An alternative blend is
Again, for children, halve the amount of essential oil.
For best results, use these essential oil blends around both ears, even if you have pain on only one side. Continue using the blend for several days after the pain goes away to prevent the infection from returning.
Note: Essential oils for ear infections are most likely to work for external ear canal infections. Because ear infections can be serious, consult a doctor as appropriate to avoid possible damage to the eardrum.
